'E.T.' singer recently broke the record previously held by Swedish pop group Ace of Base
All that she wants is another hit! Katy Perry has extended her recently set record for the most weeks in a row in the top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 and become the first act ever to spend an entire year in the upper reaches of the chart.
Swedish pop group Ace of Base held Billboard's previous consecutive-weeks record with 48, but with Perry's current hit, "E.T.," slipping from #1 to #2 on the next Hot 100 tally, the Teenage Dream singer has notched an impressive 52 straight weeks in the top 10.
Perry's yearlong chart run began last year with her sunny ode to SoCal ladies, "California Gurls," which debuted at #2 on May 29, 2010. The tune would go on to spend six weeks at #1. Before "Gurls" fell out of the top 10, her follow-up, "Teenage Dream," joined it there in August before also ascending to #1. Then, in November, her next single, "Firework," moved into the top 10 just as "Teenage Dream" exited.
Now, Perry has the Kaye West-assisted "E.T." to thank for keeping her record-setting streak going, as her Teenage Dream album nears the one-year anniversary of its release later this summer. Meanwhile, she's already planning to put out a fifth single from her hit-spawning album, the summer fun track "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)." The song was produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Perry co-wrote the track with Bonnie McKee, Martin and Luke.
Earlier this week, a still from the video for the tune hit the Internet. In it, Perry sports braces, heavy eye makeup and big '80s-style geometric earrings. Little else is known about the clip, but she did recently tweet a tease about it, sharing, "I told someone about my new music video I just filmed & they responded with 'wow, that's gonna break the Internet.' ... Should I knock on wood?"
The song involves Perry recounting the debauched fun she and her pals had the previous Friday night. "Last Friday night/ Yeah, we danced on tabletops/ And we took too many shots/ Think we kissed but I forgot/ Last Friday night/ Yeah, we maxed our credit cards/ And got kicked out of the bar/ So we hit the boulevard," she sings.
On the chorus, she continues, "Last Friday night/ We went streaking in the park/ Skinny-dipping in the dark/ Then had a ménage à trois/ Last Friday night/ Yeah, I think we broke the law/ Always say we're gonna stop."
