Katy Perry, Adele, Kanye West Lead 2011 MTV VMA Nominees

ith four different videos garnering a total of nine nominations, Katy Perry leads the field for the 28th edition of the MTV Video Music Awards. Among the nods, Perry, who dropped in on MTV to help announce this year's contenders, finds her explosive clip "Firework" in the running for Video of the Year and Best Female Video, her comical "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" vying for Best Pop Video, her gorgeous "Teenage Dream" battling for Best Cinematography her and her futuristic "E.T." up for Best Special Effects and Best Collaboration.

On her heels are Adele and Kanye West with seven nods each, followed by Bruno Mars with four and Beyonce', Eminem, Lady Gaga, 30 Seconds to Mars and Nicki Minaj with three apiece. First-time VMA nominees Foster the People, Manchester Orchestra and Tyler, the Creator have two nods each, as do longtime favorites Britney Spears, the Beastie Boys, Chris Brown, Pitbull and Lil Wayne.

Adele's nominations are all for her "Rolling in the Deep" (the most nods earned by a single video this year), while West's are spread out over three songs: "All of the Lights" feat. Rihanna & Kid Cudi (Male Video, Hip-Hop Video and Collaboration), Perry's "E.T." (Collaboration), and his own "Power" (Art Direction). Three of Bruno Mars' nominations are for "Grenade" while his hit "The Lazy Song" is contending for the Best Choreography Moonman.

Competition for Video of the Year pits three massive pop hits - Perry's "Firework," Mars' "Grenade" and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" - against two hip-hop heavies -- Tyler, The Creator's "Yonkers" and the Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise."

The Best New Artist category is decidedly rap-leaning, with Wiz Khalifa ("Black and Yellow"), Tyler, The Creator ("Yonkers"), Big Sean ("My Last" featuring Chris Brown) and Internet phenomenon Kreayshawn ("Gucci Gucci") going up against L.A. indie rockers Foster The People ("Pumped Up Kicks").

Lady Gaga, who won eight awards last year (though is best remembered for accepting her Video of the Year trophy in a dress made of meat) is up for Female Video ("Born This Way") and Choreography ("Judas") and Art Direction ("Judas"). Meanwhile, pop princess Britney Spears finds her apocalyptic "Till the World End" facing off in the Best Pop and Best Coreography categories.

Other 2010 winners hoping to make a repeat performance are Eminem (Male Video, Direction, Cinematography), 30 Seconds to Mars (Direction, Cinematography, Editing) and the Black Keys (Rock Video).
