MTV EMA 2011 : Find Out How the Nominees Were Chosen

MTV EMA 2011 : Find Out How the Nominees Were Chosen

It goes without saying that the EMA honours the hottest artists of the year. But exactly how do we measure their temperature? Here’s how MTV determined which artists were eligible for EMA nods in 2011.

Our nominations council reviews the work of artists from around the globe, working closely with local MTV channels in countries all over the world. The council measures the artist’s popularity, using numbers like how often their videos are played on MTV channels and streamed on MTV websites, as well as other video streaming sites. They factor in digital and physical sales figures for singles and albums, and radio airplay on stations around the world. And they look at what kind of following artists have in social media (think sites like Facebook and Twitter). To be eligible for a nomination, an artist must have submitted a new video to MTV within a year prior to this year’s nominees announcement on 19th September 2011.

We’re really excited about all of our nominees, although with no new releases this year, some of our favourite EMA acts such as Tokio Hotel and Green Day do not feature in the nominations. But don’t count them out--we’re looking forward to seeing and hearing what’s next for them in 2012!
